One of my favorite exercises to get fit for skiing is the lateral cross-over step-up. This one works the muscles that you need for saving it if you get caught on the inside ski.

Exercise description: Lateral crossover step-up
Stand beside the box. Take a step up with the foot farthest away from the box, crossing it in front of the other leg and up onto the box. Step through and lift the other leg up behind until you stand straight and balanced on the step up foot. Squat down a little on that one leg once before you bring the other foot back down on the floor and finally bring the first foot back down to starting position.
To make this exercise more demanding, grab a soft weight in your hands and hold it in front of you with your arms slightly bent throughout the exercise.
